Exploring Ljubljana, Slovenia

Europe – often known as the best continent for travel – usually encompasses a few destinations – France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, the UK and maybe a few nations here or there. However, just like how we discredit nations outside this continent – sometimes we tend to not recognize the extent as to which you can explore Europe itself. In today’s article you can learn a bit about a new nation – Slovenia, in specific its beautiful capital Ljubljana!

Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia, a country at the crossroads of many major countries in Europe, and is therefore shortlisted on many people’s bucket lists. However, what people don’t know is that Ljubljana is one of the cleanest, most beautiful and most underrated capitals in the world. The mix of languages and cultures (not to forget the local Slovene culture) heavily contribute to the Roman (Venetian) architecture that surrounds the lake.

Ljubljana is also known for its pretty public spaces and bridges (they are everywhere!). Some examples include Tivoli City Park, Ljubljana Botanical Gardens, the National Museum, the Sports Hall, and the Dragon’s Bridge. There are also lots of cultural opportunities, including the Slovenian Railway Museum, The Opera, the Theatre, the Metelkova and Rog, and the Šiška Cultural Quarter. Ljubljana also has some nice shopping centers like BTC city, with over 500 shops, making it one of the largest shopping complexes in Europe.

While this is just a brief summary of the city, you can check out some of the destinations in depth below!

Ljubljana CastleThis medieval style castle sits atop a beautiful hill that provides a great panoramic view of Ljubljana and the surrounding towns. Visitors may be able to take guided tours, taking a tour straight to the top, in the process, learning about the structure’s history.

Prešeren Square: This is the main square in Ljubljana and is home to many of the city’s most important buildings, including the Franciscan Church, the Town Hall, and the Robba Fountain. It’s a great place to meet new people and enjoy the beautiful weather of the Mediterranean.

Tivoli Park: This large park is located on the outskirts of the city and is home to many walking and biking trails, as well as several lakes and gardens. It’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Ljubljana Old Town: The old town is a charming maze of narrow streets and alleys lined with colorful buildings and shops. It’s a great place to wander and explore, and you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars along the way.

Ljubljana is an amazing place and such an underrated gem in Europe – and the world. I hope that if you choose to wander through the Mediterranean – you add this city to your list!
